The interactive installation ‘Gala Contemplating You’ puts visitors inside one of Dali’s most famous paintings. Over 19,000 participants from over 100 countries.

The installation is inspired by Dalí’s 1976 painting Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea Which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln (Homage to Rothko), which famously proved that 121 pixels was the minimum pixilation at which the brain is able to identify a particular human face. A photo kiosk at the Museum turned visitors’ self-portraits into pixelated replications of the original artwork and projects these new images alongside the original monumental canvas. A corresponding mobile app allowed virtual visitors – from anywhere around the globe – to submit their photos and become part of the artwork as well. Physical and digital visitors are invited to become the art hanging inside The Dalí Museum. A camera captures a GIF transformation of both the new image and the original painting side by side and either emails or tweets a link to download an image back to the person to cherish.
